The term polka is associated with different polish words. The Czech term for a Polish woman is Polska. But the Polka dot is supposed to be named after the popular Polish folk dance, the Polka, which originated in what is now the Czech Republic.  It is a particularly lively dance, and the term Polka dots became popular in Europe after it was referred to describe the small dot patterns on fabric by a fashion magazine in the 1840s.
